Why is bonsai discontinuing consumer services?

What does this mean for me as a user?
As we prepare to discontinue bonsai services, here’s what you need to know about the important dates and actions required:
-

After January 13th, 2025, the app and all associated data will be permanently removed.

Data & privacy
What happens to my transaction history and personal data after termination?
We cannot delete your data yet due to legal obligations. As an authorized payment institution supervised by the National Bank of Belgium, we are required to comply with Belgian anti-money laundering legislation.
This law requires us to keep identification and transaction data of our customers for 10 years after the termination of the business relationship, regardless of whether any transactions have taken place. This also means that the right to oblivion, as defined in the GDPR, does not apply to this data.
During this period, your data will be kept only for compliance with this law. We treat them with care and do not use them for other purposes, commercial or otherwise. After the expiration of the legal retention period, your data will be permanently deleted.
Do you have any questions about this? Please contact our Data Protection Officer at dpo@paybonsai.com
Why can't I have my data deleted after deactivating my bonsai account?
What data is retained and for how long?
We keep identification and transaction data, regardless of whether actual transactions have taken place. This data must be kept by law for 10 years after the end of the relationship.
Can I transfer my data to another service?
No. We do not offer automatic data transfer to other services.
What is the right to oblivion and why does it not apply?
The right to oblivion is part of the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) and gives individuals the right to have their data erased. However, Belgian anti-money laundering legislation provides an exception to this right for data that we are required to retain.
Will my data be used for other purposes?
No, your data is kept exclusively to comply with anti-money laundering legislation. We do not use this data for commercial or other purposes.
Will my data be shared with bonsai's business activities?
No, your data will not be transferred to bonsai's B2B activities. We treat them carefully and do not use them for other purposes, commercial or otherwise.
What happens to my data after the retention period?
After the legal retention period of 10 years, your data will be permanently deleted from our systems.
